This work, an “initiation to foolishness,” begins with the flute and clarinet on a single frequency. As one instrument maintains the same pitch, little by little the other proposes quarter-tone glissando-like movements that unbalance the original sound. This effect continues, destabilizing the permanent unison relationship between the two voices leading to a sort of retrograde polyphony that ends the first scene. In keeping with the title, the second "scene" ridicules the first, and establishes a rapidly rhythmic imitative movement between the three voices and settles into a more relaxed contrapuntal theme but that soon returns to the initial ostinato of the beginning.
