The zaranda is a toy-like object found in Venezuela and Colombia. Traditionally, it’s made from a small gourd into which two equidistant holes are drilled in its side and in its bottom a string-wrapped stick is inserted. When the string is pulled and the zaranda begins to spin it emits a characteristic sound that has sinusoidal wave-like quality. Some have said that the zaranda was first used by the Kariña Indians to attract the attention of their god, Kaputano, and that once they had his attention they would then be able to communicate their needs.
In this composition Pérez Valero uses a sonatina-like approach to recreate the gyrating movement of the zaranda, producing in this way a piece not only appropriate for younger players, but also in its melody and harmony is both dynamic and glitzy.
