The evocative titles of these pieces for flute and piano, such as “Melancholy” and “Elegy,” suggest an atmosphere of sadness, evasion and musing, which the composer obtains by using resources such as the flute’s low register, minor keys and slow tempo indications.
Calcaño’s compositions for the flute, along with other similar pieces by his contemporaries, Manuel Guadalajara and Jose Gabriel Núñez, are the only examples of this kind that have been preserved.
