John L. Walker

John L. WalkerJohn Walker has held positions as the principal oboe of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Guadalajara, the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band, and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional del Ecuador. He has appeared as a soloist with the latter two organizations as well as with the University City Symphony and the St. Louis Chamber Orchestra. The recipient of a Fulbright award, Walker researched the role of Italian immigrant musicians in the early history of the Ecuadorian conservatory. He has published articles about Latin American music in several well-known music journals and has presented papers at international conferences. In addition to teaching his instrument, Walker has taught music theory as a member of the faculty of the National Conservatory of Ecuador (1995-99), St. Charles Community College (2003-11), and Virginia Tech (2011-15). Throughout this period he has been composing works for double reed instruments as well as for orchestra and band. His work, “Interludes and March,” was premiered by the University City Symphony Orchestra in 2009.
