This is the first of a series of works under the same title that are nevertheless distinguished by the use of varying ensemble sizes. This piece, for solo flute, is characterized by a unique theme, the two parts of which differ greatly one from the other. At the beginning, as well as at the end, slow moving yet mysterious elements predominate. The middle section consists of a delirious march. At the same time, the work exploits not only the low register of the flute but also that instrument’s timbral resources, such as with multi phonics and flutter tonguing.
