Il Piccolo Concerto
exploits some of the characteristic sonorities of the double bass, such as the harsh sound of double stops, the contrast that occurs in the cantabile passages between the morbid sweetness of the fourth string and the severity of the other three, and the deep sonority of pizzicati and harmonic sounds.
