Since the colonial period we can find in Latin American music a choral-like type of song whose inspiration was derived from the various kinds of work that was oftentimes done by women, such as washing clothes along the banks of a river. Almost never written down; rather, having been passed down from generation to generation, these songs easily lend themselves to improvisation.
In this work, Pérez Valero uses a theme and variations approach to build a solid piece for solo alto saxophone. At the same time, Pérez Valero is developing a cycle of similarly themed compositions for various solo instruments.
